This year I decided to up my hair care and make a simple rosemary hair oil. Not only for me but also to stock my hand-made gifts cupboard!
A few iterations later and I am so happy with this one. I have been using it weekly and have noticed some extra strength, softness and shine to my hair. When it is out of its 'mum-bun' that is.
You can use a variety of carrier oils as a base. Jojoba was what I had on hand but I have also tried almond oil.
Not only does it smell amazing... this little ritual also provides an opportunity to squeeze a little self care into my week and takes not time at all. Simply massage a small amount into the roots of your hair, leave for 20 minutes. Wash out with shampoo and conditioner as normal.
You can find more DIY body and home recipes in my third book HOME. I hope you enjoy this super simple recipe!
Note: as with all DIY body product recipes you should always patch test before using. Take care to avoid contact with eyes, the use of rosemary essential oil has not been proven to be safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Make sure to use only pure essential oils.
Makes: 60ml
Prep time: 2 minutes
Difficulty: very easy
Equipment: Small dropper bottle (I used a 60ml bottle), small funnel (not essential)
60ml carrier oil of choice, I used jojoba oil - see 'notes' for more options
10 drops rosemary essential oil
5 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops peppermint essential oil
2 drops tea tree essential oil
Combine all ingredients in your dropper bottle. Secure the lid and shake well.
To use: Apply a small amount to the roots of your hair. Personally I like to use about 1 teaspoon (5ml) though you can use more or less as needed.
With clean hands, gently massage into the roots of your hair. Take your time. This is the nice self care bit!
Leave in for 20 minutes before washing hair well.
Notes:
Carrier/base oil - Jojoba, almond and liquid coconut oil all work well in this recipe. Jojoba is actually a wax not an oil so it can be a good option for oily hair.
Essential oils - Look for single ingredient 100% pure essential oils. You can also omit any of the other essential oils if you don't have them.
Batch/quantity - Of course if you find you love this recipe you can make a double batch to last you longer. I like to make a few batches at a time to to add to my 'hand-made present cupboard'.
Bottle - A dropper bottle does make for easy application but is not essential. This recipe provides a great opportunity to up-cycle your old dropper bottles from products you have used up. Make sure you clean really well with a bottle brush. I also like to sterilise mine with some boiling water. Take care!
