HOME by Natural Harry

$34.95

HOME by Natural Harry is available at all good bookstores, boutiques, wholefood + healthfood stores, larger retailers and online, globally.

HOME by Natural Harry is your down-to-earth guide to a resourceful, tox-free and waste-free home life. My 3rd recipe book with stunning photography by my friend Nikole Ramsay.

Seventy simple and sustainable recipes offer natural ways to care for every room in your home, and create a nurturing environment for body and mind.

A comprehensive collection of DIY recipes, tips, tricks and hacks for a calm, resourceful and tox-free existence, and a modern reference for anyone who wants to reduce their plastic waste and save money/the world at the same time!

Home by Natural Harry considers every room of the house (stain remover in the laundry, shower cleaner in the bathroom, dishwashing liquid in the kitchen) and presents alternatives to store-bought cleaning products, as well as a comprehensive chapter on body care (from toothpaste to shampoo to foaming hand wash).

A short list of ingredients is all you need to be able to make every single home cleaning and body care recipe in this book. Everything from shampoo to body butter and bath soak, bathroom cleaner to candles.

I have also included a handful of recipes for my favourite money and waste-saving kitchen staples including oaty seed loaf, coconut yoghurt and pickled veg.

Home by Natural Harry celebrates a slower, more frugal and thoughtful life.

With recipes, tips, hacks and a handy guide on stocking your cupboard,

Home makes it easy to do what’s good for your home, your body, your wallet – and the planet. Trust your ingenuity and make the leap.

A little story about HOME and how it came to be…

Home is so much more than just shelter. Home is a sanctuary, a space where you can think and recharge. Every little bit counts towards making a home feel nurturing, down to how you care for the space and the people who live there. That’s why the home cleaning and body products you use really matter.

I started thinking a lot about the products I was using at home about seven years ago when my partner, Fraser, and I were operating a small smoothie and raw desserts caravan. The more I began to appreciate how food was grown and processed, the more I wanted to eat food as close to its natural ‘whole’ state as possible, free of chemicals and preservatives. That passion for natural, plant-based living drove me to question the things I used every day. I was shocked to discover that synthetic preservatives were in almost all of my store-bought cleaning, home and body products, along with loads of ingredients I could not identify. Some were known to be harmful. I also learned that manufacturers can get away with a lot by using labels and terms that mask what a product contains. The simple word ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ can be a front for thousands of chemicals that are known endocrine disruptors. These vague labels make it close to impossible for people to truly know what’s in the products they are using. No thanks!

I had read that our skin is our (second) largest organ, and much of what comes into contact with it is absorbed right into the blood stream. We already avoid spraying synthetic pesticides and herbicides on our food, so why do we spray products that are equally harmful in our homes? Or worse, use them on our bodies?

With this knowledge, I began to look for products that were free of chemicals with the power to hurt us and our planet. It was a tedious and often confusing task, made more so by a large amount of ‘greenwashing’ (conventional and synthetically fragranced products posing as ‘earth friendly’, ‘eco’ or ‘natural’ when they are, in fact, not).

I continued to research, slowly replacing most of my household and body products with things I found at local health food stores and online. I was certainly happy with them, but I also knew there was more I could be doing, not only for my bank account but also to reduce my consumption of disposable plastic bottles. What if I could avoid buying home, body and cleaning products in throwaway packaging altogether? What if I didn’t have to go to the store at all, or wait for an online order to arrive because stock had run out?

So I set about replacing it all with homemade, natural alternatives. That was a journey in itself, especially since I didn’t have this book to refer to!

I spent hours trawling the internet for information on natural ingredients and recipes that didn’t use questionable ingredients or turn your hair into a bird’s nest (yep, been there!). But I’ve created recipes that work wonders, and so skipping the store and making them at home has become my reality. With this book, it can be yours too!

The mission of this book is to offer you recipes, tips and hacks that are as accessible, simple, effective, practical, natural and as sustainable as possible. I am also happy for the opportunity to save you money and tedious trial and error!

I know that making your own home and body products can seem like a lot of work, but once you have the core ingredients on hand, your pantry will become your store and you can top up or replace your products without having to go out for them.

Within the pages of the book you will find a list of every ingredient I call for, as well as a little explanation about what it is, what it does and where to source it. You may recognise most or all of them! You may even have many in your cupboard already!

My wish is that this book will inspire you to take steps towards less waste and greater simplicity, creating a nurturing and healthy environment for your body and mind. It will arm you with everything you’ll need to create a calm, clean home.

Thank you as always for your support and for being such a legend. Every little tag or message of gratitude and enjoyment for the first 2 books was what spurred me on to create another for you.

Soaking up some family time after a full week and before another ✌🏼
These quiet moments in between the fullness of life right now is total heaven on a stick. The beach this morning was so covered in seaweed but just a couple of meters out and it was crystal clear heaven 👌🏼

Before and 👉🏼 after neglecting the veggie patch for a full 12 months or more. 😬

We returned from a year away before Chrissy and we are only just tackling this very neglected space. We don’t normally do a total overhaul between seasons.

The truth is, once you have a veggie patch up, running and ticking over you don’t have to do massive days in it to maintain it. So I’m really excited for that! And to see our daughter enjoy and learn in this space too ☺️

I love to pop a podcast in or talk on the phone 📞 to a friend while weeding + picking. It becomes a ‘chore’ I look forward to. A chance to be in the fresh air, in nature. No time in the garden is ever wasted.

We don’t grow 100% of the veggies we eat. No where near. But we do get to supplement a little of what we get in our weekly organic veggie delivery which is epically satisfying and rewarding. I’ve learnt over the years what works best and grows abundantly in our space. I find it’s practical to grow lots of herbs and leafy greens as that’s also what expires the quickest ( as is hardest to store fresh in the fridge ). Popping out the door and a few steps to grab some fresh herbs and salad to add to dinner is just the best!

Lots of you ask for me to share more about our garden. The truth is I really haven’t shared loads of specifics as gardening is so specific to each location. Plus: we are far from gardening experts. Just having a crack and enjoying it. The failures, the successes, all of it!

However: if you don’t know where the heck to start here are a few actionable steps I do recommend:

⭐️ visit your local nursery and chat to their staff about what you want to do! The passionate gardeners there will love to help you!
⭐️ if you don’t have any space and want not only a veggie patch but a community too, sign up to your local community garden!
⭐️ find someone like @benshawpermaculture who can help you to turn your space into an incredibly productive one!

The more years I have been in the Natural Harry space the more I have realised how cyclical it can all be. I can see the pattern now.
While operating the day to day I will go through periods were I will spend months deep in thought, considering what the purpose of it all is. How I can be of use to people, where it is all going …

Then months deep in a creative phase, putting it all together in my mind, letting it sink in, pouring over lists, ideas, confiding in people.. changing the plan approx 675,543 times.

Then months in the ‘doing phase’ executing the idea, working towards the finished product or service, giving it everything I have.
Slowly I have learnt to honour these cycles and sink into them. Reasoning with the constant self talk I’m not doing enough, sharing enough consistently….

The first two phases are not for nothing. They are where the best work is done. They are what ensures the end result has passion, purpose and authenticity built into it. Slowely I am re-training myself to respect the process.
Moral of the story? No time is ever wasted you are learning in every moment. Something my mum instilled in me from a young age and that I tell myself constantly.
I may not be able to do it all and be everything to everyone but I can do what I can with the skills I have.

Random thoughts for a Tuesday evening. As I am in between phase 1 and 2 of my Natural Harry cycle 😆 🌙 I’m not talking about MY cycle but we are cyclic beings so the two are surely linked.

Do you experience these cycles in your creativity and purpose and passion led business/life too or am I the only one?

Before and 👉🏼 after.
The raspberry, white choc + nut butter wholefood ( no fake stuff, no refined oil, no refined sugar ) plant-based GF blondie addition 🌱
I have gone pretty deep on the baking this past year. From an epic amount of experimentation and developing recipes using my usual criteria ( whole, tasty, simple, minimal ingredients ) I have learnt a lot.
And as usual being the person I make these recipes for has helped also 🤣 easy? Sold! Yes pa-lease 🙌🏼
I’m going though one of those exciting and daunting phases in Natural Harry where I have some big things in the works and can go a little quiet while I work on them. I have been doing a lot of asking what it is you want and there is loads so thank you for your patience and trust always 🙌🏼🧡☺️

My first pair of blunnies @blundstoneau were purchased for me by my Grandfather on one of our trips to the local rural supplies store when I was 7-ish and I have lived in these boots ever since. I still wear the pair from when my feet stopped growing ( I’m now 35 )
Not just for in the garden either but also for hiking, camping, and day to day life with jeans or a dress. The perfect work/life boots. Being a lifetime wearer I was epically flattered when the Tasmanian family owner company asked me to collaborate on this campaign to introduce their NEW completely animal product free boot in their classic style ( the one I have always worn ). I can confirm they are SO good! 🙌🏼 plus more durable and so comfy they have already been on a few big life adventures with us. ☺️

Ok. Need your help for a quick second…

What is the difference between banana cake and banana bread?

Naming a recipe at the best of times can be tricky. Especially when you come up with something a little out of this box ( obviously not in this case 🙃 banana cake/bread ain’t a new invention - but a completely plant based version with no fake anything is kiiiinda new 🤷🏼‍♀️ ). Usually I go with the hero flavours/ ingredients when naming unless I have gone a bit rogue and think I’m funny ( hello cocoa-Bunga smoothie 😏😜 thanks past Harry for that winner 🤪 🥷 🐢 ).

I want to know… as I enjoy a warm slice of this epic deliciousness headed for the mailing list soon….. what do I call this thing. What is the difference between banana cake and banana bread?

Photo dump from early 2017 😂{ Second photo is me surfing a whale fart like it’s a 10ft barrel 😭 }
I was just searching for some images I need on an old SD card and came across these snippets of a Tassie trip years ago. ☺️
Camping, riding and surfing our way around. What an absolute treat that was. I remember doing a lot of soul searching on that adventure. Much thinking about my purpose in life etc. It felt good to shed the layers of day to day life, live even more simply, get out of reception and really consider it all. I remember trying to boil it all down in my mind. When I got to the absolute core of it. I really just want to do what I can with my skill set and I just want everyone to be happy and healthy.
Over the years, to stay on course whenever I have felt pulled in different directions I remind myself of these places and what I was mulling over.
Bit too deep for a Tuesday arvo? 😆
